Why am I participating in this program?

The 2019 Virginia 4-H/Dominican Republic participants have a variety of reasons for wanting to participate.

Cheyenne Estep, 14, from Shenandoah County, wants to experience the different cultures and wants to see the way that others live and to experience the different atmosphere.  She also wants to make connections with the Dominican children and teens that will last a lifetime!  In 4-H, Cheyenne shows market goats and also serves as an elected youth representative on the 4-H/FFA Livestock Show and Sale Executive Committee that plans and conducts the youth livestock shows at the Shenandoah Co. Fair.

Allison Douglas, 16, from Alleghany County, wants to experience the Dominican culture and to learn from the kids because their culture is very different from ours and so it would be interesting to learn something new.  She would like to learn from the kids because they always have new things to share and teach that are exciting to hear.

Chandler Estep, 17, is from Shenandoah County.  He just graduated from Central High School as his school salutatorian, in addition to graduating from Lord Fairfax Community College and Governor's School.  Chandler is a returning program participant.   This year he wants to learn more Spanish, and he also is excited to be able to guide his sister, Cheyenne, as she experiences the Dominican Republic for the first time.

Andrew Simpson, 17, is a 4-H member joining us from Culpeper County.

Nicole Gray, 17, is from Alleghany County.  She wants to have a true understanding of what it is like to be in a third world country.  Nicole also wants to be sure the camp will be fun for the Dominican campers and she wants to learn something new every single day she is there.  Nicole hopes to bring a genuine meaning to the 4-H clover!

Jeffrey Harris, 16, is an Alleghany County 4-H'er.

Savannah Angle, 16, is from Alleghany County.

Jamie Simpson, 4-H volunteer, joins us from Culpeper County.

Lee Anne Bowling-Angle, is a 4-H volunteer from Alleghany County.

Lee Ann Gray, a 4-H volunteer from Alleghany County, is joining us as a chaperon for a second time.  The first was when her son participated in the program.

Christine Hodges is the 4-H Extension Agent from Alleghany County and one half of the organizational team of this program every year.

Carol Nansel, Shenandoah Co. 4-H Agent, is the other half of the organizional team for this program.  Carol has previously chaperoned 4-H teens on a 5 week trip to Japan and she helped establish this 4-H Dominican Republic Program in 2006.  She enjoys watching the 4-H teens grow in their leadership and world citizenship skills each year.  Many lifelong friendships have been established, and much cultural understanding has taken place over the past 14 years.  End of program evaluations from the 4-H'ers show that this program is truly a life-changing experience for them.
